Obesity during pregnancy increase the risk of preterm delivery - A recent study in Sweden showed that pregnant women who are overweight or obese are more at risk of giving birth prematurely. Not only that, obesity can also increase the risk of complications during childbirth. Researchers found that this connection is very strong, especially in babies born early, ie at the age of 22-27 weeks.

"This study shows the direct relationship between overweight and obesity of the mother during pregnancy with the risk of preterm birth," said Dr. Muktar Aliyu of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, as reported by Reuters.

Aliyu further recommend that pregnant women maintain their weight before and after pregnancy, not only for their benefit but also for the interests of the child.

For this study, Dr. Sven Cnattingius of the Karolinska Institute and colleagues analyzed data from 1.6 million pregnant women and their babies born in the year 1992 to 2010. Approximately five percent of babies born early, at week 32 or 36. While normal delivery starting at week 36 to 42.

Researchers found that if pregnant women's weight beyond BMI, the risk for preterm birth they also increased. In this study, women who were overweight or obese also have a higher risk for early delivery is sudden.

Aliyu added that weight increases during pregnancy, not only before pregnancy, it also affects and can increase the risk of preterm delivery. Aliyu advised that pregnant women pay attention to healthy foods they consume so that does not cause overweight or obese.
